3 Things to Consider When Hiring a Professional Organizer

Reasons to hire a professional organizer can vary widely for many people. It often stems from someone feeling overwhelmed, stressed out, and frustrated with their space. This can be due to many factors but the bottom line is that most often it is because there are too many objects in a space without a proper “home”.

Another time that people look to hire a professional organizer is when they have recently moved or had their space (kitchen, closet, pantry, etc) remodeled. They want to make sure that everything is set up correctly in their new space. No matter what the situation is that leads to one considering hiring a professional organizer, several factors should be taken into consideration.

1. Stress Levels and Health

If you find yourself continually getting stressed out from clutter or constantly finding that objects are seemingly misplaced throughout your home, it may be time to consider a professional organizer. A professional organizer is more than someone who will just tidy up a space. An organizer will help you put systems and products (baskets, bins, labels) into place that should be easy for all members of the family to maintain. This doesn’t mean that things will never become
messy again; especially in a family with busy work schedules and children. A professional organizer will help you find a home for each of your objects and will find a way to make it clear to the entire family, through strategic organizing products and labels, where the objects should be placed when it is time to tidy up. In today’s modern society, we are busier than ever with work and family responsibilities. We need to take every measure possible to prevent unnecessary stress in our lives. Working with a professional organizer to create a living environment that is calm, serene and organized may be one of the best investments you can make in your health.

2. Need for Accountability

I have had several times when clients have reminded me that they do know how to organize but they just haven’t had the time, resources or desire to do it. I get the sense that they feel they have to justify to me the reason why they are hiring someone to do something they feel that they should do themselves! I like to remind them that this is the same as hiring someone to clean your home or a personal trainer.
Yes, many of us know how to clean or how to workout, but we either don’t want to do it, don’t make the time to do it, or don’t have the time to do it. There is no need to justify why you are bringing in a professional! I think of a professional organizer as an accountability partner. It is someone who will work with you to declutter your space, will take care of the donations (so they don’t sit at your back door or in your car for months) and will do all of the measurements, product research, ordering, procurement, returns and driving around that it takes to get all of the best products to maximize the space. Yes, all of these things may be something that you can do yourself. But if you haven’t done it, it may be time to look into hiring a professional to make sure that the job gets started and finished and looks and functions in a way that is tailored to your needs.

3. Budget

Hiring a professional organizer is a luxury service. However, one would argue that the number of benefits that come along with having peaceful and serene surroundings is hardly something that should be considered a luxury. We should all have access to this kind of environment in which to live. Professional organizers charge in various ways. Some require the client to purchase packages of hours, while others have the client pay per project (i.e. a pantry makeover). Either
way, it is a one-time investment in yourself and your sanity that although may look expensive up front, is well worth the investment. There may be ways to save money with a professional organizer if budget is a concern. Offering to work alongside the organizer is one way to cut down on the number of hours that the project will take and therefore what the project will cost. There is also a wide range of cost when it comes to products. A walk-in pantry with built-in shelves could cost anywhere from $500 to $3000 in products depending on where those products are purchased. An organizer who does their due diligence in asking all of the questions they should be asking before working in your space, will know and understand your budget and should be able to address this with you. If budget is not a huge concern, that is fantastic as well. Take full advantage of knowing that you have someone who loves getting into the details of your space and your belongings and helping you resolve organizing issues that are bothering you. Let them do the work and splurge on the products that you think will make the space not only functional but beautiful. The financial investment will pay off in numerous ways.
