Tips and Tricks for Organizing your Bedroom Closet

Are you tired of rummaging through piles of clothes and accessories in your closet every morning? Do you find it difficult to keep your closet organized? You are not alone in this daily frustration, but with a little bit of effort and planning, you can transform your closet into a well-organized and efficient space that will make getting dressed a breeze. In this blog post, I’ll share some tips and tricks on how to organize your closet for maximum efficiency.

1. Declutter your closet

Decluttering starts with taking all of your items out of the space. In this case, you would remove all items from your closet and decide what to keep, donate, and discard. This is a time to think carefully about items that you rarely wear. Some items are rarely worn by the sheer nature of what they are (i.e. gowns for galas, or swimsuit coverups) but other items are rarely worn because they don’t fit anymore or they are worn out. If items are in the latter category of not fitting or being worn out, I encourage clients to permanently remove those clothes from their closet. Many times in my work as a professional organizer, I have seen clients who have items that they have never worn. Sometimes this is because they have so many items jammed into the closet that they forgot they have it, but also there are times where it was simply a bad impulse buy. This is a time to be honest with yourself about whether you will ever wear it. Sometimes you may need to make the hard decision to donate clothing that has never been worn or rarely been worn.

2. Categorize your clothes and accessories

After decluttering your closet, categorize your clothes and accessories into groups. Group similar items together, such as all your shirts, pants, dresses, and skirts. You can also categorize your accessories, such as shoes, belts, bags, and jewelry. In my work as a professional organizer, I try to understand within each category, how the client likes to further organize their clothing. For example, some clients like all of their shirts subdivided and grouped together by long and short sleeves. Some clients like all shirts in one category regardless of sleeve length, but want all of them in rainbow-color order. It is possible that you don’t know what your preferred method is. This is where a professional organizer can help you determine which systems are best for your needs so that you can set up a system that you can maintain.

3. Decide where categories will be placed

When I work with a client, I ask many questions about their lifestyle. This is because it is important to put the items that are used frequently into an easy-to-access space and items that are rarely used, should be put in the less easily reached spaces. I also like to get clarity from clients of which items they want to be hung and which items they are comfortable with folding and putting into drawers or bins. This is called space-planning and it is a very important step in the process of determining which products you may need to buy to help organize your bedroom closet.

4. Get the right products to organize your space

When we think of products to organize a closet, things that come to mind are: hangers, shoe organizers, belt hooks, bins and baskets, drawer-separators. This list can be overwhelming. I often start by discussing hangers with the client. Using matching hangers that fit the clothing needs and budget can make a huge impact in the overall look and function of your closet. If you want to have a clutter-free closet, you will get the most impact from having the right hangers. I also like to discuss products that will organize each of the
other categories for the client’s items. Bins are good for many different items such as swimsuits, specialty work-out attire, hats, belts, and scarves. However, it goes back to space-planning to help determine what you would want to put into the bins as well as how many places you have for bins. Another consideration is how to store shoes. Oftentimes vertical space is not well-used in a closet. There are many options now of stackable shoe bins that can fit nicely on the top of a closet to maximize the space. My favorite options for closet products are probably best for another blog post, but using a professional organizer to help you with the decisions can ensure that you are getting the most bang for your buck in maximizing your space.

5. Label your bins

To really finish off the space correctly, you need to make sure that you label the bins that you use in your closet so that you don’t forget where your items are. Labels are also a sort of visual accountability to put the items back where they belong. Even if you are a person who tends to toss clothes at the end of a long work day or change outfits 5 times before going out for an evening, knowing that when you take the time to tidy up, you will know exactly where to put everything back, makes all the difference in keeping up your newly organized closet system.
In conclusion, these are the major things that are necessary to consider and execute when organizing your bedroom closet. Getting the right products to help you create and maintain what you have set up is also essential. This is absolutely something that you can do alone but it does take a fair amount of time and effort. Your bedroom closet is something that you likely interact with every day of your life. Working with a professional organizer can help take the stress out of the process of setting it up efficiently and beautifully so you can get on with starting your days in a serene and organized space!
